'Killer shrimp' have been spotted in British waters, the Environment Agency warned

Notorious "killer shrimp" which threaten local wildlife have been spotted for the first time in British waters, the Environment Agency has warned.
Conservationists expressed "extreme concern" as it emerged dikerogammarus villosus were discovered by anglers at Grafham Water reservoir in Cambridgeshire.
Insects such as damselflies and water boatmen, common sights on British lakes and rivers, could be at risk, with knock-on effects on the species which feed on them, conservationists said.
The shrimp, which has spread rapidly through western Europe in recent years, pose no risk to drinking water supplies, but anglers using the reservoir were being urged to make sure they do not transfer the species to other lakes.
Richard Benyon, the Defra minister in charge of the natural environment, said: "I am extremely concerned to hear that this highly invasive species has been found in Britain.
"Anglian Water has acted quickly to put biosecurity measures in place and the Environment Agency is working hard to establish the extent of the problem and what action may need to be taken.
"We need to do everything we can to protect our native wildlife and young fish from the potential damage the killer shrimp can cause."
Paul Leinster, chief executive of the Environment Agency, said: "We are devastated that this shrimp has been found in Britain, and very grateful to the keen-eyed anglers who found it.
"We are currently establishing the degree of the problem, and whether the shrimp is only in Grafham Water or if it is in nearby lakes and the Great Ouse as well."
The shrimps were confirmed as likely to be the killer species after samples were sent to the Environment Agency for identification last week

why have the beaches round llanfairfechan, penmaenmawr, conwy, deganwy and west shore all lost their blue flag status for beach and water quality!!! its a big, big area around the conwy river estuary so either something is coming down the river or something coming into this area alone from a nearby site, as beaches around this area are still blue flagged as far as i know. could it be the waste water from the penmon fish farm, which seems to have killed the fishing up that way, either way the fishing is not great in this area.

At last the wind had dropped on bank holiday Monday and after squaring off some garden jobs we loaded Marks new P13 and my P13 onto the car and met up with Mike in Aberaeron at Tuesday lunchtme.

The water was well flat and the sun shining ;D We launched off the beach and headed out to one of the usual marks

The plan was to plug and spin for bass on the way out, and then tie up with baited shrimp rigs to try for the bream if no bass showed up. Nothing to show for the surface plugging or bottom spinning, so we opted to tie up and put some mackeral baited shrimps down. After half an hour of nothing we went further out and tied up at a new mark - bites for the offset and Mike was soon pulling in the odd mackeral off the bottom as well as a plague of dogfish!

http://s65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...t=IMGP1574.mp4

I managed a small pollack, and then more dogfish than I could shake a stick at ::)

Whilst Mike continued bringing in the mackeral and yet more dogs

I then had a characteristic set of bites and my rod did a dance for my first mackeral of the day; followed, much to my delight by a different sort of bite and the only black bream of the day (and first of the year for me) came up and into the supper box ;D I lost a couple more mackeral in between regular sandpaper rats.

I had a pot down on the bottom with mackeral in it to put a scent trail out for the bream, and to try for some live prawns or something bigger with claws, and had a bit of a shock when I brought it up feeling very heavy and discovered a decent size bull huss sat inside it, along with a frightened looking wrasse! As my better half likes huss, it was kept fresh for despatching later to make huss goujons :P

Mark got off the mark with his first dogfish off his new P13

and then had Mike and I in hysterics when he pulled up his first ever bull huss, and wasnt sure how to handle it :o

A scarred hand later and it was released to grow bigger ;D

It went quiet then so we went for another hour or so of drifting for the bass - one jumped clean vertically out of the water in front of me at one point but we didnt hook up with any despite trying bottom and surface lures.

We headed in after nearly 8 hours of fishing in the sun, tired but happy bunnies.

An enjoyable session, and nice to see some eating fish coming in.

Spend an hour after getting home, reading the relevant bit in the River Cottage fish book, and following the instructions on how to gut and skin the huss (not as hard as I thought it was going to be with the help of some large pliers) before removing the central spine and getting it ready to make goujons for the following days tea - a new one for the kids, but it seemed to go down well 8-)

After a couple of days back at work, it would have been rude not to have taken advantage of the still weather, so Mark and I got out again at 6pm on Thursday and spent a couple of hours plugging/spinning and bottom fishing for the bass/bream/mackeral but we both blanked - still enjoyable session though in the sunshine, fishing into dusk.

Heres hoping that this month brings more settled weather and less wind, and the bass onto the surface for some bigger sport ;)

Or are there more reports of blanks and crap shore fishing around this year than usual? When you look at the reports from this forum and others (like WSF) you just seem to find loads of reports of blokes going to promising looking (and proven) venues and not even getting bites.

Obviously there are some reports of lads doing well, but it seem to me the overriding trend of this summer is blanks and very small fish, except for those targeting mini-species and wrasse.

Any thoughts?

ok as said in my previous post, theres no scottish forum so i will post this initially in here till moved.

I had originally planned a holiday in Fort William, but after making some enquiries about possible launching places, one place was suggested by numerous people as a good location.
Resipole on Loch Sunart. Get yourself a cuppa and be seated comfortably, because here the story begins. . . .

After packing the car and boat on the friday afternoon and grabbing some sleep prior to the long journey, i got a call from Thomas to say he had finished work about 10:30pm. Picking him up i set off on my 375 mile journey to the scottish highlands.

8AM in the morning i was on the site and setup...

A short nap later i was off exploring my surroundings.

As you can see it's a stunning place !
It wasnt long till i was out fishing, choosing a rocky head a short walk from the site, and setup some feathers, with thomas having a go with small slug-go's

the feathers produced me fish almost straight away, with small pollock and coalies showing a love for them...

and then the mackeral made a bit of an appearance...

the sunset that night was fantastic as the wind dropped

The following day we all went out on the boat on a fantastic morning.

We watched the porpoise in the distance but they are pretty boat-shy so didn't get any pictures sadly, but each time i take amanda out i seem to see members of the dolphin family !

Anyhow it was time to do a it of fishing after having a bit of a race up and down the Loch.

Lauren was the first one into mackeral, her first ever and the smile says it all..

Thomas got his first fish of the trip too, (slug-go's didnt work the night before) but had to do it differently

Ben also got his first ever mackeral too

Thomas decided to see what was on the bottom and was rewarded with everyones favorite fish . .

We all sat round the BBQ that night and ate mackeral till we couldnt move - lovely stuff ! ! !

Myself and Thomas went out the following day to have a "proper" fish, so after getting a dozen mackeral we headed from the shallows (150 foot deep) water where we found most mackeral to be caught, to the deep water.
We located a spot 410 foot deep (dont know about you but thats scary deep to me)
Down went the whole squids and mackeral flappers, and we waited. it wasnt long till we were rewarded with bites and up came these babies. . .

Not monsters i know, but we have never caught spurdogs before and they were our target species for the trip.
Result ! ! !

We had some other trips out around the Ardnamurchan peninsular, and had a bash by the Lighthouse,

resulting in some lovely coloured pollock, and some launce too - livebait !

We stopped at another mark later that evening and had another session, resulting in a mixed bag of codling, 3 bearded rockling, goldsinny wrasse, butterfish (more livebait), pollock, coalies and yet more mackeral (we ate well whilst away i can tell you)

The last night i was determined to get something decent on the livebaits, and the butterfish produced me a fish

and one for Thomas too

then something a lot better....

8lbs and i was over the moon. Lauren insisted on a picture too with it . .

Sadly the Launce were now deadbaits so i opted to freeline one, and was instantly hit by a steam-train of a fish that i never saw after it ripped off about 25 yards of line in a second or two.
Had this happen to me a couple of times but with the trip home looming in the morning we had to call it a night, frustrated by the lost monsters and happy as a pig in muck with the ones landed !
Fascinating to see little green flashes in the water after the dark too - dunno what it was that was phosphourescing, but they were very bright for a second or so !

It was unanimous that the holiday was a success, with the only problem being the mighty midges. The remedy was to wear a fine mesh hood to keep them off our faces, long sleeves and trousers and they became just about bearable.

with a bit of luck, i hope to return in the october half term, and to try to land the leviathans that i lost ! !

After looking forward to it for so long, the day of our second trip of the year aboard Mikatcha out of Aberdyfi finally arrived, typically though the "summer" weather tried to ruin things for us and the forecast all week had been touch and go, one minute it was for sunny skies and light winds, the next it was torrential rain and gale force winds [3]. As it happened we were relatively lucky and the weather finally settled somewhere in between - cloudy skies but mainly dry with light winds! [1] just in case things deteriorated later in the day we decided to set sail early (7 o’clock) and so me, SteveA and Glyn from our club met up at 4:30am [2]. After a detour to pick up SteveO we arrived at Aberdyfi just before 6:30 where we met the rest of the crew for the trip, Cuffmeister, his brother Chris and a couple of their mates Ads and John, all from Holyhead.

As we got aboard the boat Charlie the skipper told us all about the weather the day before, Aberdyfi had been battered by force 8 winds and they were so bad that he hadn’t even been able to get out into estuary to where Mikatcha is moored, let alone take the boat out, another indication of how bad things had been was that parents had even stopped their kids from crabbing on the jetty in case they were blown off into the water! (9) Sadly as we were to find out even though the wind had dropped by now and it was a beautiful morning when we set off, the gales would still have an impact on our days fishing.

Charlie said that the mackerel had been about it good numbers over the previous week or so but it looked like the bad weather had broken up the shoals, the water was also a bit on the coloured side too and we struggled to get about 20 , it was lucky that we planned to do some trolling for bass with artificials as we wouldn’t have enough fresh bait for the day otherwise. The last time we fished on Mikatcha we had 3 tope runs within 10 minutes but this time the action was a bit slower, not that much slower though and the first run came after about 15 minutes [M] sadly this resulted in a lost fish as one of Cuffmeister’s knots didn’t live up to the job (1) this resulted in a bit of friendly Mickey taking but that was soon forgotten, when a little while later the next 2 runs came together and soon after that the first 2 tope of the day were brought aboard, one to Steve O (GB 2)

And the second one, yep you’ve guesses it (15)! To SteveA (GB 1).

Both nice fish around the 30lb mark.

Things went quiet again for about another 15 minutes or so when another flurry of activity resulted in another brace of tope around the same size as the first 2, the first to Chris

and second to Ads

It was during this second spell of action that my usual bad luck with Aberdovey tope struck again, the last time out I had 4 runs and failed to land any, this time my only run of the day resulted in me being bitten off within seconds [sa].

After this the action died off again so we all got second rods set up to fish for bream, as with the tope sport was a bit quiet to start with but as the tide eased the fishing improved and we all had some good sport, landing enough bream to give everyone a decent feed, topped off by a nice fish of 2lb 2oz to me, beating my previous PB by over a pound [6].

Next up was a bit of trolling over the reef for bass, to minimise tangles Charlie would only allow 4 rods to be fished at once so we organised ourselves into 2 teams of 4 and decided to swap over with the rods after each run along the reef, 4 rods were soon set up with a variety of Redgills and Sidewinders and the first run began. The Dwygyfylchi / Llanfair lads were first to have a go and none of us knew quite what to expect but as I soon found out that wasn’t a problem and instinct takes over, we had only been trolling for a few minutes when my rod was pulled hard over and as instructed I shouted "Fish on!" (13) and Charlie stopped the boat while I reeled in, it was only a schoolie but we were off the mark (cl). Next run and it was the turn of the Holyhead lads to have a go, this time it was John’s turn for a hook-up on the same rod that I had used :(, it was certainly the lucky rod on the day and we caught fish on most runs, I even managed to catch 2 fish on the same run once {co}. The other rods took their fair share too and SteveA caught his first bass of the year to take him up to 35 species ;), we had managed to catch at least 20 bass between us before they went off the feed, the biggest weighing in at around 5lb.

It was getting late in the day now so we anchored up once more to try for tope before we called it a day but sadly it wasn’t to be, the ebb tide was running quite strongly by know and the weed was bad after the recent rough weather so the they didn’t want to play ball, we did manage to top up our bream supplies though and catch a few small huss but that was it for the day and all too soon it was time to head for home .
Before the trip I had hoped to get a tope, a greater weaver and a tub gurnard to really get my species count moving again and personally I was gutted that I didn’t catch any of my target species but I couldn’t really complain, with about 15 bream including a new PB and 6 bass, I’d had a great day {thu}. Everyone else had a great time too and even though our tope haul was down from 19 the last time we fished there that was probably down to the effects of the bad weather so we’re already planning ahead to next year when hopefully the weather will play ball and we’ll get into the tope again, who knows I might even get one myself next time.
